Trump Says US to Take Control of Venezuela

(MENAFN) On Sunday, President Donald Trump asserted that the United States is “in charge” of Venezuela following a military operation that led to the “captured” Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were transported to the US to face criminal charges.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump remarked, "We're dealing with the people who just got sworn in. Don't ask me who’s in charge because I'll give you an answer and it'll be very controversial," when questioned about whether he had spoken with Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who was recently appointed acting president by Venezuela’s top court. Pressed further, he clarified: "We’re in charge."

Trump emphasized that Washington seeks “total access” to Venezuela’s oil and other resources, which he said are necessary to “rebuild their country.”

He warned Rodriguez that she “will face a situation probably worse than Maduro” if she refuses to cooperate with the US.

The president explained that major American oil corporations would be tasked with reconstructing Venezuela’s infrastructure, pledging billions in private investment without reliance on US government funds.

"The big oil companies (are) going to go in and they’re going to fix the infrastructure. They’re going to invest money. We’re not going to invest anything. We’re going to just take care of the country," he stated.

Trump also revealed that a significant number of Cuban security personnel assigned to protect Maduro were killed during the raid early Saturday.
