UN Alarmed by Cuba’s Fuel Shortages
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric addressed the escalating humanitarian situation during a Monday press briefing, stating: "I can tell you that the UN continues to monitor the situation in the country and is working with the Government to provide more support, including food, water and sanitation and health care,"
The UN is "concerned about the growing fuel shortages and their impact on people," Dujarric emphasized, highlighting "disruptions to the delivery of clean water, medical care, food and other critical aid in parts of Cuba hit hard by Hurricane Melissa last October."
Aviation operations face particular risk, according to humanitarian officials. "Our humanitarian colleagues note that there are also concerns that the fuel scarcity could have implications on the operation of airports," Dujarric added.
Cuban authorities recently halted international aircraft refueling services at the nation's airports due to critical aviation fuel depletion—a direct consequence of Trump's tariff ultimatum.
The hardline stance follows the Trump administration's January 3 military operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a key ally of Cuba's government, marking an intensified US approach toward the island.
In a late January executive order, Trump classified the Cuban regime as an "unusual and extraordinary threat," declaring a national emergency to address the perceived danger.
The UN's "Plan of Action"—launched November 2025 in Hurricane Melissa's aftermath—requires $74 million but remains "currently only 23% funded," Dujarric reported.
Appealing for increased international contributions, Dujarric reaffirmed the UN's dedication to "supporting recovery efforts led by the authorities and to helping families recover."
