Trump Says Cuba Talks Underway
"We're talking to Cuba right now," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Washington.
The president identified Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the point man driving the diplomatic outreach, while issuing a blunt directive to the Cuban government.
"They should absolutely make a deal," he added.
Trump offered little optimism about Cuba's standing on the world stage, delivering a stark verdict on the island's condition.
"We'll see how it all turns out. But Cuba and us, we are talking. In the meantime, there's an embargo, there's no oil, there's no money," he said.
When reporters pressed him on whether he would consider a military operation against Cuba — similar to the one conducted against Venezuela — Trump sidestepped a direct answer while leaving the door conspicuously open.
"Why would I answer that? If I was, it wouldn't be a very tough operation, as you can figure, but I don't think that'll be necessary," he said.
The remarks come as Washington has moved aggressively to tighten its economic stranglehold on Havana. The US has reinstated its full blockade of Cuba, explicitly declaring its objective of dismantling the island's communist government. A sweeping embargo on fuel deliveries has compounded an already severe energy crisis gripping the country.
Washington previously succeeded in severing Cuban oil lifelines from both Mexico and Venezuela — and in the Venezuelan case, US forces took the extraordinary step of capturing President Nicolas Maduro. The Trump administration has further threatened to impose proportional import tariffs on any nation that attempts to circumvent the fuel embargo by supplying energy to Cuba — a move designed to deter potential allies from offering Havana an economic lifeline.
