Trump Confirms Ongoing US Talks with Cuba

(MENAFN) Donald Trump said Monday that the United States is currently engaged in discussions with Cuba.

"We're talking to Cuba right now," he told reporters while traveling to Washington.

He indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading the communication efforts. "They should absolutely make a deal," Trump added.

Describing Cuba’s situation in stark terms, Trump referred to the country as "a failed nation." He continued, "We'll see how it all turns out. But Cuba and us, we are talking. In the meantime, there's an embargo, there's no oil, there's no money," highlighting ongoing economic restrictions.

When questioned about the possibility of military action similar to past developments involving Venezuela, Trump declined to provide a direct answer. "Why would I answer that? If I was, it wouldn't be a very tough operation, as you can figure, but I don't think that'll be necessary," he said.

According to reports, Washington has reimposed its blockade on Cuba and declared its determination to remove the island’s communist leadership through various means. The administration has also restricted fuel shipments to the country, worsening existing shortages.

Reports further indicate that US actions previously disrupted oil deliveries to Cuba from Mexico and Venezuela. In Venezuela’s case, US forces reportedly detained President Nicolas Maduro.

In addition, US officials have signaled plans to levy proportional import tariffs on countries that continue supplying fuel to Cuba, increasing pressure on governments that maintain energy trade with the island.
